It is not a pass-fail assessment. It is an assessment that will create a study program for you after the initial assessment.

To prepare for the exam students should watch this video: Overview of the ALEKS Program (about 2 minutes). Afterwards, read through the frequently asked questions at the following link: Placement Exam (ALEKS)

Most introductory math courses have a minimum ACT/SAT prerequisite. Taking the ALEKS placement assessment is an alternative way to meet the prerequisite.

You will know your score the instant you finish your initial assessment. It will be in bold above your placement pie chart after you have finished the assessment.

Scores 38 or higher will automatically be sent to the university. Your scores are manually entered into the registration system within 24 business hours.

If you have questions about what score is needed on the ALEKS in order to waive prerequisites for a specific course, check the list at the following link:

The ALEKS Placement Assessment covers material from basic math through pre-calculus. The exam takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. If you are unhappy with your initial score, the software includes a learning module that helps you review and practice things you missed, so you can improve your placement. All scores over 38 are automatically reported to the university within 24 business hours.

The assessment is completed on your own computer from anywhere in the world.

You will pay $20 directly to the ALEKS program when you create an ALEKS account.

If you create duplicate accounts, you will be charged to each account. You are not allowed to purchase ALEKS twice. You must complete the program within the five-exam limit of six months.

Ensign College requires an ALEKS Placement exam for students who do not have pre-requisite requirements of Advanced Placement credit, ACT/SAT scores, or transcripts showing college math credit to enroll in specific courses. This is a math “Placement Assessment,” it is not a test.

If you are ready to take the Initial Placement Assessment, you must:
  • Log into your BYU-Pathway Worldwide Student Portal
  • Log into your ALEKS account in a different tab to access the assessments.
  • Take the Initial Placement Assessment.
  • After the Initial Placement Assessment, you are required to spend a total of 5 hours in the Prep and Learning Module to help refresh your knowledge on forgotten topics. This is a self-paced online review.
  • After reviewing the modules, you will have the opportunity to take an official Proctored Placement Exam either at the Ensign College Testing Center or using online proctoring software. There is a $5 fee to use the software.
  • You must take the Proctored Placement Exam at least 48 hours after taking the Initial Placement Assessment and after working in the modules for at least 5 hours. Scores will automatically be submitted within 24 hours.

If you have any questions about taking the Placement Assessment, please contact the Ensign College Testing Center

How to schedule a proctored exam:
  1. Schedule an appointment through RegisterBlast.
  2. Select “Placement Exam from “Which Type of Exam Do You Wish to Take?”
  3. Continue to make your selections from each of the remaining drop-down menus.
  4. If payment is not required, click Ready to check out. Complete the credit card fields and click Purchase Exams if payment is required. Upon a successful transaction, you will receive an immediate email confirmation receipt. You must have this receipt with you at the time of testing.
  5. A confirmation email will appear on the screen; you may print a copy for your records.
  6. For virtual appointments, Testing Center employees will log you into the test using a password.  They will then direct you to install software on your computer called Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor.
  7. You will need a webcam to take the test remotely and a computer running Windows or Mac OSX (not a Chromebook). You will have two hours to complete the proctored exam.
It will take about 24 hours to upload the proctored results to the Ensign Registration Team.  After 24 hours, you can register for courses

The ALEKS test score will NOT fulfill the math foundation's requirement for graduation. Getting a high enough score on the test may waive prerequisites for Math or Chemistry courses, but no credit will be received for taking the test.
