Federal Financial Aid includes Federal Pell Grants, Direct Student Loans and Direct PLUS Loans. The federal government gives these funds to enrolled students who meet their basic eligibility criteria. Federal financial aid is awarded after completion of the FAFSA and any other required verification documents found on the financial aid portal.
See the following tutorial on how to fill out the FAFSA forms.

For information regarding what to do if verification is required after submitting the FAFSA, go to the following link: FAFSA Verification

Federal loan policies can be found here: Loan Policies

International students do not qualify for any type of U.S. federal financial aid unless they are a permanent resident (have a green card).

To receive the maximum amount of qualified federal aid, you must be enrolled in at least 12 Program Applicable credits, though most awards can be prorated down to 6 Program Applicable credits. If you enroll in credits that are not Program Applicable, you will not receive federal aid for those credits.

You must also be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards.

Additional Information:
If you have been awarded a Federal Pell Grant -and then subsequently transfer- you must contact the Financial Aid office of the school you are transferring to if you wish to transfer your Pell Grant.

A Federal Pell Grant is provided by the U.S. Department of Education on the basis of financial need. Pell Grants are based on the estimated cost of attendance, length of the enrollment period, and the number of program-applicable credits in which a student enrolls. Most students do not have to be enrolled full-time to qualify for a Pell Grant; however, taking less than 12 credits will result in a prorated award. You must be an undergraduate who does not already have a bachelor’s degree. A Pell Grant is not a loan and is not required to be paid back.
A Federal Direct Subsidized Loan is provided by the U.S. Department of Education on the basis of financial need. A Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan is also provided by the U.S. Department of Education; however, it is not based on financial need. You must be enrolled in at least 6 Program Applicable credits in order for your loan funds to disburse. Principal and interest payments are postponed while the student is enrolled in at least 6 credits (half-time) and during the six-month grace period after graduation or ceasing to attend at least half-time. While you are enrolled in at least 6 credits (half-time), the federal government pays the interest for you. For more information on student loans and grace periods, please visit https://studentaid.gov/
A Federal Direct Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) is available for the parents of undergraduate students who are enrolled in at least half-time (6 credits). The amount borrowed by the parent may not exceed the estimated cost of attendance during the period of enrollment. Please contact the financial aid office to determine eligibility.
The federal government gives these funds to enrolled students who meet their basic eligibility criteria. Federal financial aid is awarded after completion of the FAFSA and any other required verification documents found on the financial aid portal.

Non-BYU-Idaho Scholarships: BYU-Idaho has partnered with Scholarship Universe to match students with private scholarships for FREE. Scholarship Universe properly vets the scholarships listed in addition to tailoring scholarship opportunities specific to the information listed on the student’s profile. This is available to all students. They should answer a series of questions that will match them with available scholarships.

Other scholarships not affiliated with BYU - Idaho can be sought out through high school through high school counselors, community or high school clubs, local organizations and businesses, and state or national scholarship programs. BYU-Idaho encourages all students to apply for outside scholarships as many are not only for incoming freshmen. Online Students do not qualify for BYU-Idaho Scholarships.

Private Loans: Private loans are educational loans provided by banks, credit unions, and other lenders. BYU-Idaho encourages the use of federal student loans over alternative loans due to the typically higher interest rates and fees of private loans. If a student has applied for a private loan, have them email the Financial Aid Office at financialaid@byui.edu so we can certify their loan.
