Article Overview

1. Dropping a Course

(BYU-Pathway Worldwide Online) Brigham Young University-Idaho Information
You can drop courses through the Degree Planner tool using the following steps:
  1. Log into your Degree Planner.
  2. Navigate to the registration tab at the top of the page.
  3. Next to each registered course will be an option to drop (depending on the dates).
  4. Click "drop" next to the course(s) you want to drop, and the system will ask you to confirm a second time. This process will officially drop you from a course.
The academic calendar link is provided at the top for you to be aware of how dropping a course may impact you. You should check this link prior to dropping any courses. You can also find the academic calendar by going to this link: Academic Calendar

A hold on your account will not prevent you from being able to drop a course.

Block 2 Drop/Withdraw deadlines will follow the Academic Block Calendar.

GS 170 COREQUISITE DISCLAIMER:

If you complete GS 170 in the first block of the semester, you will be unable to drop the corequisite course, such as CSE 210, after the first block. This is because corequisite courses must be taken and completed together, therefore they must be dropped in an approved sequence (GS 170 before the corequisite as described by the Degree Planner). By completing the first part of the corequisite (GS 170 in the first block), you MUST complete the second part of the corequisite, which is most commonly a full semester course. You will be unable to drop the corequisite if it is a full semester or second block course if GS 170 was completed in the first block because you cannot drop an already completed course. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE.

2. Withdraw from the Program

(BYU-Pathway Worldwide Online) Brigham Young University-Idaho Information
There is no official withdrawal procedure. To withdraw, you must drop all of your classes and/or not register for 2 consecutive semesters in order to no longer be considered a student in the program. During the 3rd consecutive semester without registering for courses, you will be withdrawn and lose your active enrollment status.

If you wish to come back to the program, you will have to register within two semesters of not taking any courses. If it has been more than two semesters, you will need to re-apply to the program.
(BYU-Pathway Worldwide Online) Ensign Information
You can withdraw from Ensign College at your own discretion.

You may withdraw or drop all courses through the drop deadline.

You should be aware of the financial aid implications of withdrawing from college. You are strongly encouraged to meet with the appropriate services prior to withdrawing completely.

Ensign College does not have a formal withdraw process. To completely withdraw from the program, you will need to drop all courses and not register for any courses for 2 consecutive semesters. After registration closes for the third consecutive semester of non-enrollment, you will be entered into an automated withdrawal process.

3. Defer

(BYU-Pathway Worldwide Online) Brigham Young University-Idaho Information
You are eligible to defer/skip or sit out for up to 2 consecutive semesters (two semesters in a row). There is no official deferment process. You will simply not register for classes for that semester.

If you do not register for courses for 2 consecutive semesters you will lose your active student status at the university. During the 3rd consecutive semester without registering for courses you will be withdrawn and lose your enrollment status. You will need to re-apply as an online student again, in order to continue. Missionaries who want to come back after their mission will also need to re-apply as online students.

For a student to skip or sit out a semester, you will need to know the following
  • Make sure you are NOT ENROLLED for any courses for the semester they choose to skip.
  • Make sure that you have NOT already missed more than 2 semesters in a row.
  • Make sure to register for courses again after you have sat out 1, or 2 semesters. You can go ahead and register like normal when you return from skipping a semester.
A form is not required; to skip a semester you simply need to not enroll for courses. It is encouraged that you have at least 1 semester earned before deferring/taking a semester off, but it is not required.
